This is the service everything else on this site connects back to. A correctly sized battery is what turns a solar array from a daytime-only asset into a system that works for your whole day — and, with the right setup, through a power cut too.

Why storage changes the maths

A typical home uses relatively little electricity during the exact hours solar panels generate the most. Without a battery, that surplus gets exported at a Smart Export Guarantee rate that's almost always lower than what you pay to import power back in the evening. A battery stores the surplus instead, so you use your own cheap daytime solar after dark rather than buying it back at peak import prices.

Sizing it to your home

There's no single "right" battery size — it depends on your roof's output, your evening and overnight usage, and your budget. Your installer will size the system around your actual consumption pattern rather than a generic recommendation, and will confirm exact capacity and cost as part of your quote.

Power-cut backup, if you want it

Not every battery installation is set up to keep your home running during a grid outage — it depends on the inverter and how the system is wired. Charging and exporting on your terms

A battery isn't just a solar accessory — on a smart or time-of-use tariff, it can charge from the grid overnight at the cheapest rate and discharge or export at the strongest point in the day. Frequently asked questions

How much can a home battery actually store? +

Usable home battery capacity typically runs from around 5kWh up to 15kWh or more, sized to your roof output and evening usage.

Can I add a battery to solar panels I already have? +

Yes — most existing solar systems can be retrofitted with a battery, subject to a compatibility check by your installer.

Will a battery keep my home running in a power cut? +

Only with a backup-rated inverter and setup designed for it — ask specifically, as not every battery installation supports this.

Does adding a battery affect my Smart Export Guarantee payments? +

No — you can still export surplus solar and earn SEG payments; the battery simply lets you choose when to store or export it.

Is battery storage covered by 0% VAT? +

Yes, domestic battery storage qualifies for 0% VAT in Great Britain until 31 March 2027, whether installed with solar or added later.
