Why a battery matters more than the panels
Most homes use the most electricity in the evening. Solar panels, however, make the most power around midday. A battery stores the surplus so you can use it after dark.
Without storage, spare solar power goes to the grid. Your supplier pays the Smart Export Guarantee rate for it, and each supplier sets its own rate. For example, in October 2026 Octopus Energy's open tariff paid 4.1p per kWh. Meanwhile, the Ofgem price cap averages about 26p per kWh for electricity until 31 December 2026.
Use more of what you generate
A battery stores daytime solar for the evening peak. As a result, you export less and buy less.
Plan for power cuts
Many solar and battery systems switch off during a power cut. Since backup is an extra feature, ask your installer whether your quote includes it.
Match your use to the tariff
Smart time-of-use tariffs charge much less overnight. For example, Intelligent Octopus Go charged 7.6p per kWh in its cheap window in October 2026, for homes with an eligible EV or charger.

The installer surveys your home and gives you a quote. You choose whether to go ahead, and there is no obligation.
The installer does the survey, the design and the fitting, not us. We only make the match. Because you need MCS-certified installers to claim Smart Export Guarantee payments, we match you only with installers that hold MCS certification.
- 0% VAT applies to qualifying home solar panel and battery installations across the UK until 31 March 2027. From 1 April 2027 the rate is due to revert to 5% under current legislation.
- MCS certification is the UK quality mark for installers and products. Your system must be MCS-certified before you can claim Smart Export Guarantee payments.
- Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): energy suppliers pay you for surplus solar electricity you send to the grid. Each supplier sets its own rate, which has to be above 0p, so compare tariffs before you choose.
- Grants have changed. ECO4 is scheduled to end on 31 December 2026 with no successor, and the Great British Insulation Scheme has closed. Low-income households in England in lower-rated homes (EPC D to G) may qualify for the Warm Homes: Local Grant through their council.

How does home battery storage work? +
A home battery stores electricity from your panels, or from the grid at a cheap rate. You then use that power later, for example in the evening. An inverter converts the power between the forms the battery and your home use.
Can I add a battery to solar panels I already have? +
Often, yes. However, it depends on your inverter and your current system, so an installer needs to check it first. We can match you with an installer for a battery-only job.
Is battery storage VAT-free? +
Yes, for now. Home batteries, including ones fitted on their own without solar, are VAT-free (0%) until 31 March 2027. From 1 April 2027 the rate is due to revert to 5% under current legislation.
