Solar battery installers in Manchester, matched for free

Solar Base Energy helps Manchester homeowners find solar battery installers without calling round. You fill in one short form, and we match you with an MCS-certified installer. Because we only match, we do not fit batteries ourselves.

Batteries are the focus of our advice. Panels make power by day, yet many homes use most of theirs at night. A home battery storage system moves spare daytime power into the evening.

What a 4 kWp array generates in Manchester

PVGIS, the EU Joint Research Centre tool, models a 4 kWp south-facing array in central Manchester at about 3,544 kWh a year. That is roughly 9 percent below the 3,880 kWh modelled for Nottingham. Both figures use a 35 degree tilt and 14 percent losses.

The gap is modest, and it is only a model for the city centre. Yet your roof may do better or worse. Thus, ask installers how they calculated your own yield.

A kWp is a kilowatt of peak output under test conditions. Real output varies through the day and the year, because sunlight changes. As a result, a yearly total is the fairest way to compare quotes.

Manchester homes, roofs and conservation areas

Census 2021 counted 214,732 households in Manchester. Flats make up 34.6 percent, while semi-detached homes make up 31.9 percent. Terraces are 28.0 percent, while detached homes are rare, at 5.4 percent.

Because so many homes are flats, ask who owns the roof. Flat owners should check their lease and ask the freeholder before anyone fits panels or a battery. Meanwhile, ask installers how many panels fit your roof.

The council lists 35 conservation areas, including Chorlton Green, Victoria Park and Castlefield. In England, most roof panels on houses need no planning application. Yet street-facing walls in conservation areas face limits, and the rules changed on 27 August 2026.

Where to put a battery

Battery siting follows PAS 63100, a fire-safety specification from BSI. It prefers outdoor spots, because fire is the main risk. Indoors, it keeps batteries away from bedrooms and escape routes.

It also says to keep batteries at least 2 metres from stored flammables. Yet space is tight in many flats and terraces, so ask where the unit will go. A garage, outbuilding or rear wall may suit, and your installer should explain the choice.

Ask the installer to mark the planned spot on a photo or plan. Thus you can compare quotes on the same basis, because siting affects safety.

Grid connection in Manchester

Electricity North West runs the local grid, from rural Cumbria to urban Manchester. That firm is your network operator, or DNO. Since boundaries can split a city, check your postcode with it.

Your installer handles the DNO side, by notice or request as needed. The routes are called G98 and G99. Thus, ask which one your quote uses.

Tariffs, grants and schemes

A battery works best with a tariff that rewards timing. For example, Intelligent Octopus Go charged 7.6p per kWh overnight in October 2026 for eligible EVs and chargers. Our guide to Octopus battery storage and smart tariffs explains how to compare them.

The Smart Export Guarantee pays you for surplus solar power sent to the grid. Each supplier sets its own rate, although your system must be MCS-certified. Our page on a smart tariff for your battery explains the options.

Ofgem's price cap averages about 26p per kWh for electricity until 31 December 2026. Since a unit of your own solar power can replace one bought at that rate, using more of it matters. Meanwhile, HMRC says batteries fitted without solar are also VAT-free until 31 March 2027.

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has promoted a group-buying scheme, Solar Together Greater Manchester, run with iChoosr. Check its site to see if a round is open, because rounds change. GMCA also works with councils on the Warm Homes: Local Grant for low-income homes.

Choosing an installer in Manchester

Choose an MCS installer, because the MCS mark is behind payments under the Smart Export Guarantee. Read our guide on what MCS certified means to see how to check a certificate. Batteries fall under MIS 3012, the MCS standard for fitting them.

Get at least two quotes and compare them line by line. For example, check usable capacity, the inverter, the warranty and what happens in a power cut. Many systems switch off in an outage, so ask whether your quote includes backup.

Want one supplier for panels and storage? Our solar and battery bundles page explains what a package includes. Our guide to solar panel payback periods in the UK shows how to test a quote, because payback depends on your use.

Meanwhile, compare nearby cities. See our pages on solar panel installers in Liverpool and battery installers serving Bradford. Both use the same matching process.

Manchester FAQs

Do I need planning permission for a battery in a Manchester terrace? +

Ask your installer or Manchester City Council, because the answer depends on the unit and where it goes. PAS 63100 advice favours outdoor or garage spots away from bedrooms and escape routes.

Can I add a battery to solar panels I already have in Manchester? +

Often yes, although the answer depends on your inverter and your MCS paperwork. An installer checks whether your system suits an added battery. Thus, keep your current paperwork to hand when you ask for quotes.

How much electricity do solar panels make in Manchester? +

PVGIS models about 3,544 kWh a year for a 4 kWp south-facing array in central Manchester. Yet that is a model, so shade and roof direction will change your result.

Is there a group-buying scheme for solar in Greater Manchester? +

The GMCA has promoted Solar Together Greater Manchester, run with iChoosr. Since rounds open and close, check its site first.
